Renal Denervation: A Breakthrough Therapy for Resistant Hypertension

Renal Denervation (RDN) is a minimally invasive procedure used to treat drug-resistant hypertension by disrupting sympathetic nerves around the renal arteries. These nerves play a key role in regulating blood pressure; overactivity leads to chronic hypertension.

Using radiofrequency, ultrasound, or chemical ablation techniques, RDN reduces nerve activity, promoting better blood pressure control. The procedure is performed via catheter insertion through the femoral artery and requires no implants or open surgery.

Ideal patients include those who:

  • Have uncontrolled hypertension despite multiple medications

  • Are intolerant to antihypertensive drugs

  • Have high sympathetic activity or metabolic syndrome

Clinical trials have shown consistent blood pressure reductions, especially when combined with lifestyle changes and medication. RDN is also being studied for heart failure, chronic kidney disease, and arrhythmias.

With rising global hypertension rates, renal denervation offers a promising adjunct therapy for long-term blood pressure management.
